GRILLED BLOOMING ONION
A perennial restaurant favorite, this is my version which can be made in minutes and cooked on a grill or oven for a much healthier version which is equally tasty. No frying! Enjoy!
On a side note, my posts have been irregular in recent times because of personal issues. I will also be traveling for most of September. I plan to start posting regularly again from October onward.
Ingredients:
1 large sweet onion (Vidalia works well)
1 egg
1 tbsp hot sauce (of your choice, I used Louisiana style hot sauce)
½ tsp olive oil
½ cup Panko style bread crumbs
1 tsp chilli powder or Paprika
1 tsp kosher salt
Non-stick cooking spray
Method:
Chop off the top of onion, remove skin and turn over.
With a sharp knife start cutting down vertically, starting a ¼” from the edge and all the way down.
Repeat every ¼”.
Chop off the root of the onion.
Turn over and spread open the pieces like petals.
Place in a bowl.
Prepare egg mixture:
In a small bowl, mix egg, hot sauce and olive oil.
Pour mixture over onion, making sure to cover maximum surface area.
Prepare Panko mixture:
In another bowl mix Panko bread crumbs with chilli powder and salt.
Sprinkle this mixture over the onion, making sure to cover maximum surface area.
Spray with non-stick spray and refrigerate until ready to cook.
Turn grill to medium high (350*F).
Place onion on a grill pan covered with aluminium foil.
Grill uncovered for 20 minutes.
The tips should start browning.
Cover onion with foil and grill for another 15 minutes, for a total of 35 minutes.
If you don’t have a grill, a convection oven or air-fryer works well too.
